Welcome to the network: FOUR PAWS International

We are pleased to welcome another associated member to our network: FOUR PAWS International

FOUR PAWS is the global animal welfare organisation for animals under direct human influence, which reveals suffering, rescues animals in need and protects them. Founded in 1988 in Vienna by Heli Dungler, the organisation advocates for a world where humans treat animals with respect, empathy and understanding.

As one of the largest international animal welfare organizations, FOUR PAWS sees its role strengthening the protection of animals and the people who depend on them in disasters. The organization’s disaster preparedness work is critical in their approach. FOUR PAWS support local animal welfare organisations in disaster-prone areas so that they can respond quickly and effectively when disaster strikes, and rescue, treat and protect animals.

FOUR PAWS advances that animals must be included in national disaster management systems. From pets to livestock, working animals to stray animals, they are all part of the fabric of our communities, and when animals suffer, people often suffer with them. People risk their own safety to save a stray, experience deep guilt when forced to leave a pet behind, or face devastating economic hardship when their livestock is lost. Protecting animals in crises is, in many ways, also protecting the people who depend on them, care for them, and love them.

FOUR PAWS’ representative within DCNA is Patrick Durrant, Director of the Rescue and Preparedness Department:

“FOUR PAWS is delighted to join the DCNA community. DCNA brings together scientific expertise and practical experience to strengthen disaster preparedness across sectors. Together, we can advance a more comprehensive approach to disaster management – one that includes and protects animals, and in doing so, supports the resilience of entire communities.”

We are looking forward to working together!
