New project: MEDLOK

by Isabel Anger

MEDLOK deals with the possible distribution of medical devices in crises. The FFG KIRAS project MEDLOK, led by the Graz University of Technology, Institute for Health Care Engineering, aims to create a groundbreaking approach to improving disaster response in the healthcare system and ensuring an efficient supply of life-saving medical technology products.

The decentralized management of medical devices represents a major challenge in crisis situations. Delays in the redistribution of necessary resources can be life-threatening. This is exactly where MEDLOK comes in: The aim of the project is to develop a central system that enables the efficient distribution and use of medical devices in times of crisis based on geographical data, artificial intelligence and innovative IT technologies.

Highlights of the project:

  • Creation of a central database for medical devices in Austrian healthcare facilities
  • Use of geoinformation technology and geospatial artificial intelligence to analyze and visualize resource availability
  • Simulation of alternative courses of action to support decision-making in times of crisis
  • Introduction of a uniform nomenclature and data structure for medical devices
  • Proof-of-concept and demonstrator for an innovative MEDLOK system

What is DCNA's role in the project?

The DCNA leads work package 6 - dissemination and exploitation - and is also significantly involved in work package 2, in which, among other things, a user acceptance analysis is conducted. The opinions of crisis management staff from potential user institutions and the acceptance of potential operators from the ranks of the relevant stakeholder and user groups are collected, documented, and processed.
