University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria becomes a new member of DCNA
by Johanna Zweiger
We are pleased to welcome FH OÖ Studienbetriebs GmbH (University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria) as a new ordinary member of Disaster Competence Network Austria. With around 5,600 students (as of May 2023), it is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Austria. FH OÖ consists of four faculties: Hagenberg (computer science, communication and media), Linz (medical technology and applied social sciences), Steyr (economics and management) and Wels (technology and applied natural sciences), and offers 71 bachelor's and master's degree programs (full-time and part-time). These degree programs focus on practical work on specific projects in business and manufacturing.
Internationalization is particularly important to Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences - it has around 317 partner universities around the world and ten degree programs are exclusively taught in English. On the other hand, research and development are of great importance. Between 2020 and 2022, the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) made around 11 million Euro in funding budget available for research projects at the FH. It is also involved in research projects at the EU level (Horizon Europe). One of the main goals of the FH is to make the findings gained in research applicable in practice - including in the areas of robotics, artificial intelligence and mobile applications. This is where there are many links with the work of DCNA. For instance, the Mobile Computing course deals with problems and possible solutions that are relevant to crisis and disaster research.
