More than a third of the EU's surface area is covered by forest, which, in addition to its economic and social function as a recreational and protective space, makes an important contribution to the fight against climate change as a CO2 sink. Apart from increasing deforestation, forest fires also contribute to a reduction in forest cover. Due to more frequent extreme weather events, these occur not only in the Mediterranean region, but also more often in Central and Northern Europe.

The EU project TREEADS is dedicated to the development of a holistic forest fire management platform that encompasses all three phases of forest fire management: prevention, detection and response, restoration. A variety of technological solutions are being developed for each of the three areas, ranging from the development and use of a wide variety of UAVs, the use of VR for training measures, to social media analysis and the development of fire-resistant material for house construction.

At the heart of the project are the eight pilot regions where the various solutions will be tested. There will also be a case study in Austria with the scenario of a peri-urban forest fire.

The DCNA is involved in the Austrian pilot study as well as in the dissemination and awareness raising of the project results.
