René Kastner

René Kastner, Bakk.rer.soc.oec. MA

René Kastner is a Sociology graduate from the University of Graz and is engaged in the field of social-scientific disaster research since 2009. Within the framework of a research stay in New Orleans, Lousiana, he documented the reconstruction after hurricane Katrina over several months. Mr. Kastner extended his specialized knowledge through the collaboration with numerous relief forces and continual participation in disaster related conferences domestically and abroad. Since 2017 he is regularly engaged as a guest lecturer at the German Academy for Crisis Management, Emergency Planning and Civil Protection.


Within his master thesis he compared the US and Austrian strategies regarding civil disaster relief (also known as spontaneous disaster assistance). His methodological focus lies on qualitative social research and mixed method approaches.

Within DCNA René Kastner is currently responsible for the development of the field “evaluation of disaster management exercises” and is the contact person for the working group “extreme weather events”. Furthermore, Mr. Kastner is contributing to the newsletter and deals with media concerns of DCNA.
